Bird Restrictions Coordinator

Volunteer Required: To manage the Bird Restrictions page on FRCC website.

This post is for someone to keep an eye on the Voluntary Restrictions On Climbing imposed as a result of birds nesting on Lake District Crags and to update the club website as appropriate.
We need a volunteer quite urgently as restrictions start in late February.

Background
The FRCC website is an important reference point for information regarding temporary restrictions on climbing due to nesting birds. For a few months of the year this is a changing situation as birds fail to nest where they have done in the past or decide to nest somewhere new. The information needs up dating to take account of this.

The Role
The role doesn’t take a lot of time typically:

  • Attendance at an annual meeting to agree forthcoming restrictions. This normally takes a half day and is usually based in the Kendal Area. Last year there was a virtual option to account for my distant residence.
  • Updating the website restrictions page for the start of the nesting season (15 Feb), this only involves deleting the previous year’s updates and checking the list already on the page and adding any new restrictions or removing those that the group has agreed to be no longer necessary, this is normally only involves one or two nesting sites.
  • Checking for emails from the group and adding updates to the page where there are changes to the list eg for newly discovered nest site or where a site has been abandoned, or early lifting due to failed nesting or early fledging of young.

Additionally the post holder might:

  • Sign up to check the odd site where we think a restriction is probably not needed. There was two of these last year.
  • Post on the UKC Access Forum as appropriate. See below.

UKC Crag Access Forum

Examples of posts to UKC Access Forum Last Year.

  • Posted on the UKC Access Forum to remind folk of the start of the Raven and Peregrine restrictions (2 posts needed 15 Feb, 1 March)
  • Posted updates UKC as per the updating of the FRCC website, this is often early lifting of a restriction as young have fledged
  • Posted reminders on UKC if disturbance has been reported. There were two cases in 2023, Raven Crag Walthwaite and Stonestar Crag.
  • Posted a thank you note on UKC when all the restrictions have finished

Skills Needed

It will help if you have an interest in birds but this in not essential. You will need to be able to update the WordPress page on the FRCC website. If you have no experience of this training will be given (1 to 2 hours) and help will be on hand. Once you know what to do it is no more difficult than editing a Word document and does not require coding skills.
Who to Contact
If you are interested in volunteering for this post please contact the person named in the original email/post.
